Cell 1 excavation complete at long-term waste management facility
With excavation of the first cell in the engineered aboveground storage mound complete and installation of the highly engineered base liner now underway, the Port Hope Project remains on track to start cleaning up the historic low-level radioactive waste in the Municipality of Port Hope in 2018.
Radiological field testing gets underway at next 800 properties
Fieldwork begins this fall to test more than 800 properties as part of Campaign 2 of the Port Hope Project Property Radiological Survey.
ARCADIS, under contract with the PHAI, began scheduling appointments with property owners in September. The current fieldwork involves interior and exterior gamma radiation scans and borehole drilling/soil sampling. Radon monitoring, the first test in the survey program, has been completed at these properties.
Road allowance investigations next step in Property Radiological Survey
Radiological investigations of approximately 175 Port Hope road allowances and laneways will begin in October as part of the Port Hope Project Property Radiological Survey. No road closings are anticipated, and the work is expected to take approximately eight months to complete.
Property Radiological Survey: campaign update
To date, almost 4,000 properties are involved in some aspect of the Property Radiological Survey, which will test approximately 4,800 properties in Port Hope for the presence of historic low-level radioactive waste. Here’s an update on where we are in the five campaigns:

Site-specific remediation designs are underway for the 45 properties confirmed to have waste;
in total, 430 properties were tested.
